How to Write an Obituary

Writing an obituary is not difficult if you follow these easy recommendations. First of all an obituary is generally written in paragraph form and is designed to chart the deceased life in chronological order. A well written obituary should focus on the deceased accomplishments and the positive impact that they had on his or her family and friends. The most important goal is to create a compelling story of life and we can help you do so if you follow this simple obituary template.

How to Write an Obituary Step 1
Start with a short announcement or title, this is typically one sentence or less.
  • Full name of the deceased, including nickname, if any (check spelling).
  • The deceased age at death.
  • Place of residence (name of city) at death.
  • List the day and date of death.
  • Place of death.
  • Cause of death (if appropriate).

How to Write an Obituary Step 2
Next write a short biographical paragraph about the deceased life.
  • Date of birth and place of birth.
  • Names of parents.
  • Childhood information: siblings, friends stories, schools, friends.
  • Date of Marriage(s) along with place and name of spouse.
  • Name of schools or education, college and other.
  • List designations or awards and notable recognition.
  • List employers, jobs, coworkers and colleagues.
  • Places where they have resided throughout their life.
  • Lists hobbies, sports and other activities.
  • Charitable positions, religious affiliations, political or fraternal positions.
  • Notable achievements or disappointments.
  • Unique or unusual attributes, humorous or other stories.

How to Write an Obituary Step 3
List any family members the deceased is survived by.
  • Immediate family members spouse, children, parents and siblings.
  • Secondary family members aunts, uncles, grand children and close cousins.
  • If possible list any others including nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws.
  • Feel free to list any friends and or pets (if appropriate).

How to Write an Obituary Step 4
Should you desire for people to attend services please, list when and where the ceremonies will take place.
  • List the day, date, time and place of Visitation if applicable.
  • List the day, date, time and place of the Reception if applicable.
  • Include the name of officiant, pallbearers and any other information.
  • List the name and contact information of funeral home in charge of arrangements.

How to Write an Obituary Step 5
The end of the obituary is designed to finalize the details and thank any people.
  • List any memorial funds that are established.
  • Be sure to include the information on where to send flower arrangements.
  • Thank any people, institutions or groups.
  • Include a quotation or poem.
  • Three words that sum up the life.
